What is a Disciplinary Meeting?

A disciplinary meeting is an opportunity for the employer and employee to get together to discuss the existing working relationship.  A request for a disciplinary meeting will be made formally by the employer notifying the employee in writing that they request a meeting. This is to ensure the employee is not blind-sighted by the meeting.

Why is a Disciplinary Meeting required?

The meeting is initiated by the employer to discuss the employee’s performance, workplace conduct, or workplace violation. This meeting will give the employer the opportunity to ask the employee a series of questions pertaining to the incident prompting a disciplinary meeting. However, the meeting will also give the employee the opportunity to provide their version of events and explain the reasoning for their actions.

What do you need to do?

It is important to engage legal representation to best assist you. A disciplinary meeting can be quite stressful for the employee, and it is important to discuss the matter with a legal representative to ensure you have a clear understanding of how the meeting may unfold. You may also consider having a support person in the meeting. However, a support person is there to assist you and take notes, they are not permitted to speak on the matters discussed in the meeting. After the meeting, the employer will take time and deliberate on the matter. This may result in a warning letter, dismissal of investigation by the employer, or possible termination of employment.

Should you be in a situation where you have been provided a letter to attend a disciplinary meeting, give Adams and Partners a call.
